Headwaters Announces New Executive Director

June 27th, 2019 – Minneapolis

Maria De La Cruz has accepted the executive director position at Headwaters Foundation for Justice. Board Co-Chair Erica Mauter led a search committee through the entire hiring process. They are pleased to announce that Maria will start on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2019.

“Maria’s insights on social justice philanthropy and clear dedication to our mission are exactly what Headwaters needs to hone its role as a movement-building organization,” said Erica. “Our board is excited about this next chapter and we stand ready to support her leadership transition in whatever ways we can.”

Maria is currently the Foundation’s associate executive director, a role she’s held for the last four years. She leads all community-led grantmaking, leadership development, support beyond the dollars, communications, and fundraising strategies. Maria also currently serves on the boards of the Minnesota Council of Foundations and Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice—reflecting her commitments to both an inclusive philanthropic sector and collective liberation.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University, her master’s degree from Hamline University School of Business, and her Juris Doctorate from Hamline University School of Law. She previously held positions at OutFront Minnesota, Minnesotans United, TakeAction Minnesota, and Casa de Esperanza.

“Words can’t express how overjoyed I am to be chosen for this opportunity,” said Maria. “I’m proud to see how Headwaters has grown bigger networks of grantee partners, donor organizers, and community grantmakers who are here to advance grassroots movements for justice. We still have bold work to do and I’m eager to get started.”

Current Executive Director David Nicholson’s last day will be Friday, August 30th, 2019. Headwaters plans to celebrate both outgoing and incoming leadership transitions and will announce details later this summer.
