Somali Museum of Minnesota

Grantee Year:

The Somali Museum Dance Troupe is a performing ensemble made up of Somali-American youth who study traditional dances from across Somalia. There is a great need for platforms for Somali-American youth to represent their own experiences, in resistance to negative and misleading narratives about Somali-Americans in mainstream media. In addition, youth need spaces to cultivate resilience amidst the toxic environment of contemporary American society. With a Community Innovation Grant, they will build the Troupe’s impact as a creative space for Somali-American youth to use dance as a tool for expressing their experience, through conversation and collaborative art-making that represents their stories.
