Hooyo's Hijab (mother's protection) is a project of Somali Arts Language & Leadership Institute (SALLI) that consists of conversations and storytelling circles with Somali women of all ages resulting in a public photography exhibit. The goals of this project include: 1) creating space for Somali women to gather and converse about how their lifestyles have changed throughout history and the diverse ways they express themselves as Diasporic Somalis, 2) serving as a mirror where Somali women photographers and designers will capture the stories and images of Somali women of all ages who will see themselves reflected and celebrated, and 3) further cross cultural understanding among non-Somalis in Minnesota. Through this project, Somali women will shape the narrative about Somali women in Minnesota, as opposed to having the narrative created by others.
