Oromo Community of Minnesota

Grantee Year:
Saint Paul

This project is a collaboration between The Oromo Community of MN (OCM), African Immigrants Community Services (AICS) and Project Fresh Start (PFS). PFS' staff will assist African refugees and homeless individuals in accessing services for which they are eligible but lacking a medical opinion form outlining their eligibility. These forms must be signed by either a Licensed Clinical Psychologist or Licensed Clinical Social Worker after they have conducted a thorough diagnostic assessment. The Oromo culture does not prescribe to western medicine's notions of mental health. This approach circumvents this and allows people to learn about services and access resources without self-identifying as needing mental and/or chemical health services.
