Guadalupe Alternative Programs (GAP) will use its grant to support its Indigenous Youth Ceremonial Mentoring Society. Staff will launch a project to boost awareness about and challenge the Doctrine of Discovery, a public decree issued in the late 1400s by the Vatican. The decree gave the Spanish exclusive rights to occupy Indigenous lands and peoples. The goal of this project is to design new strategies to influence the Vatican to repeal and formally abolish the Doctrine.
GAP will use a mix of education and community engagement to show how the Doctrine of Discovery continues to negatively impact Native communities today. It believes a formal abolishment from the Vatican would be an enormous step towards healing the harm caused by European colonization and help open new dialogue about reducing systemic racism and disparities.
