In 2016, the Twin Cities Good Food Purchasing Policy Coalition (GFPP) began to work with communities and institutions to prioritize environmental sustainability, local economies, nutrition, valued workforce and animal welfare, rather than just price, in making purchasing decisions. Their coalition’s key stakeholder recruitment helped identify Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) as Minnesota's first institution to prepare for GFPP adoption and implementation. One of their goals is to support disadvantaged farmers and processors in accessing institutional markets while meeting the standards presented by GFPP. GFPP's project will bring small and disadvantaged farmers together to discuss the main issues they face and what support they need in becoming GFPP institutional suppliers.
